As winter approaches, more people are heading to ski resorts to enjoy the thrill of skiing and snowboarding. However, these exciting sports come with the risk of injury. In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, Dr Eileen Tay, an orthopaedic specialist at The Orthopaedic Practice and Surgery (TOPS), shared essential tips on preventing and managing injuries on the slopes.
Dr Tay emphasised the importance of warming up before hitting the slopes. She recommends focusing on the muscle groups involved in skiing, including the hips, quadriceps, forearms, and shoulders. Simple exercises like bodyweight squats, lunges, arm circles, and wrist rotations can improve blood circulation and help prevent injuries.
After skiing, post-ski care is just as important. Dr Tay advises stretching muscles, using a foam roller to relieve tightness, and staying hydrated to promote recovery. For added relaxation, using a sauna or steam room can improve blood flow to the muscles.
In the unfortunate event of an injury, Dr Tay advises skiers to stay calm and move to a safe area. It’s crucial to assess the severity of the injury and notify the ski patrol for assistance. In the case of joint injuries, Dr Tay recommends the RICE method—rest, ice, compression, and elevation—to manage pain and swelling. However, if symptoms like severe pain, dizziness, or difficulty breathing arise, seeking medical attention immediately is essential.
By taking these precautions and being mindful of your body, you can enjoy skiing while minimising the risk of injury.
